Joe’s Stone Crab

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Joe's Stone Crab, a Miami Beach institution, I was invited to photograph the restaurant and its staff for a commemorative book, Waiting At Joe's. While Joe's is famous for its legendary three hour wait, this project turns the lens on the people behind that experience, specifically the lifelong servers who have become part of the restaurant's legacy for nearly half a century.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

  • All-Access
With full access to the restaurant, I spent three days capturing the personalities and stories that define the Joe's experience. The work focuses on the human element of a century old institution, moving beyond the food to highlight the faces that have shaped its history.

  • Permanent Installation
One of my images was selected for permanent display at the restaurant’s entrance. It sits alongside a photograph by Helmut Newton, serving as a visual anchor for guests as they enter one of the most famous dining rooms in the country.

  • Editorial Art Direction & Editing
I oversaw the process of capturing and editing the visual narrative for the commemorative book. The goal was to ensure the photography felt as timeless as the institution itself, creating a record of the restaurant’s history. The book is now available through major bookstores nationwide.

  • Legacy Project
The project memorialized a 100 year milestone by documenting the staff and the culture behind the scenes. This work shifted the focus from the restaurant's famous long wait times to the people who have maintained the institution's standards for decades.
